Canberra, Australia
4th October 1997

The fountain & flowersCanberra, a fairly young city, is the Capital of Australia. It is a planned city and is based around a man-made lake, Lake Burley Griffin. Canberra is totally surrounded by mountains and is the passage way to the Snowy Mountains, Australia's principal ski resorts. Canberra is halfway between Sydney and Melbourne.

The day tour took us around the city visiting the Parliament House, the High Court, the Australian War Memorial and Telstra Tower. The landmark of Canberra has to be the Captain Cook Jet Fountain in Lake Burley Griffin at the Commonwealth Park. The jet, at full blast, rises about 150 metres into the air (left). You wouldn’t miss it if you are around Canberra.

Another main attraction while in Canberra is Cockington Green which features delicately crafted miniature displays of buildings in Great Britain, landscaped gardens and mazes.

As the season bloomed into Spring (end of September and early October), Canberra celebrates its annual Canberra Floriade or simply known as the Flower Fest. Ah, endless row of flowers in an array of colours (also left), some still in bulbs, some blooming, many fully bloomed. It was beautiful!
